Implementation of Unified Messaging and Collaboration Suite for Government of Uganda

Overview

Impiger partnered with National Information Technology Authority, Uganda in implementation of a scalable and cost-effective Unified Messaging and Collaboration Suite for Government of Uganda to enhance employee productivity with traditional email, and accessibility to collaborative applications to support service delivery.

Project Background

The Government of Uganda represented by the National Information Technology Authority Uganda (NITA-U) has received a credit from the International Development Association towards the cost of the Regional Communications Infrastructure Program Phase 5 - Uganda, and it intends to apply part of the proceeds of this credit to payments under the agreement(s) resulting from this project implantation: Supply, Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance of Unified Messaging and Collaboration System(UMCS) for Government of Uganda.

Challenges

Currently Government entities uses public and private email services for collaboration. The private services are built in isolation on different platforms, leading to inefficiencies, security risks, duplication of hosting infrastructure and outdated information stored within personal inboxes and practices that do not support knowledge management. Public email services such as yahoo, Google, Hotmail, etc. are pervasive especially for institutions which have not yet been able to invest in email systems. These independent messaging infrastructures also make it costly for the Government to execute her mandate on even the most basic collaborative services and pose operational and security challenges.

Solution

Impiger implemented an open source collaboration suite with below feature

  • Messaging - A unified corporate email platform for email communication
  • Calendaring – for managing the meetings, tasks and reminder
  • Contacts management – to manage internal contacts
  • Corporate Social Media integration – to enable employee to socially collaborate within and between organization
  • Collaboration including, Instant Messaging, Video Conferencing and Audio Conferencing- to help conduction audio/video conference.

Along with above feature, Impiger helped in migration of the existing system and data to new collaboration suite.

Results

The system brought a unified platform for all the departments and helped to manage data in a centralised server. It also improved collaboration efficiency of the government employees.
